The article outlined the difficulties BP faced in trying to maintain their brand reputation during the Gulf of Mexico. The article also outlined research conducted by Burson-Marsteller with more than 200 companies across Europe, the findings of which were as follows:

• The cost of a crisis was estimated to be around £737,000
• Only 53% of firms surveyed had a crisis management plan in place
• 68% of those businesses which had drawn up a plan got it because of a previous crisis
